Making Straw Muscles is a fun craft project and an educational experiment that can be done at home. So let us begin and make this homestay fun and productive.
You can follow these simple steps to make your DIY straw muscles:
Take a piece of construction paper and two straws.
Cut one straw into 3 pieces of length 4 cm each.
Mark 3 rectangles in the construction paper. Two rectangles of length 4 cm and breadth 3 cm and one rectangle of length 8 cm and breadth 3cm.
Now cut out the marked rectangles.
Take the two pieces of straw and tape them to the two small pieces of rectangles.
Now tape the third piece of straw on the tip of the longer rectangle.
Arrange all the three pieces as shown below:
Turn over all the three pieces.
Now, tape the second straw at the back as shown in the figure above It will look like this.
Take a piece of string slightly longer than the length of the model. Tie a knot at one end of the string such that it cannot enter through the straw.
Insert the string through all the three pieces of straw.
Your straw muscle is ready.
The above prototype resembles a part of our hand(a finger). The paper support acts like a bone and the straw represents a tendon(a type of connective tissue that connects bones and muscles). When you pull the string, the other parts of the structure start to move. As the muscles have flexibility, they pull the bones and joints together with them resulting in the movement. So the string in this case is the muscle that contracts and relaxes to create motion to other parts of the straw muscle.
