The COVID 19 pandemic has had an immense impact on the education system and has forced us to reconsider the way we teach and learn.

WWF Nepal’s Generation Green and Karkhana Asia are pleased to launch the program ‘हाम्रै हातमा प्रकृति’ a stay at home activity for kids, under parent supervision, as an effort to ease learning from home. By engaging children in creative problem-solving activities in localized DIY formats, we can help them truly understand their curriculum.

Last week, we curated an activity that helped to make a wind turbine on your own titled आफैँ हावा-घट्ट बनाऔं. This week we bring you an activity where you can learn how to make a terrarium on your own, let’s get started!

DIY: Let’s make a terrarium! 

आफ्नै टेरारियम बनाऔँ!

Once he turned 13, Mukesh started asking the bigger questions about our planet. He was amazed by the world around him -the sun, the moon, the stars, and the clouds were all functioning like clockwork. The forests gave clean air, rain, and food. Insects, animals, and fungus then took care of the forest. Everyone and everything looked after each other to make a perfectly balanced cycle that took care of itself.

Mukesh understood that plants were the crux of the balance of the world. Plants make both oxygen and carbon dioxide. They regulate the water cycle. Then Mukesh thought, “Can I make my own small little world that takes care of itself as the real world?”

मुकेश १३ बर्ष पुग्यो । सानो उमेर हुँदादेखिनै उस्ले ठूला-ठूला प्रश्न सोध्न गर्दथ्यो। उसलाई आफ्नो वरपरको संसार देखेर रमाइलो लाग्थ्यो। घाम, चन्द्रमा, बादल, आकाशमा घुमिरहँदा रहेछन। वनजंगलले स्वच्छ हावापानी र खानेकुरा दिने रहेछ। किराफट्यांग्रा, जनावर, र परजीवीहरुले जंगलको ख्याल राख्दा रहेछन। यसरी सबैले एकअर्काको ख्याल राखेर सन्तुलित वातावरण बन्दो रहेछ। 

मुकेशले थाहा पायो कि विश्वको सन्तुलनमा बिरुवाहरुको प्रमुख भूमिका हुँदोरहेछ। बिरुवाहरुले अक्सिजन र कार्बन डाइअक्साइड दुवै उत्पादन गर्छन्। उनीहरुले जमिनको जलचक्रलाई पनि सन्तुलित बनाउछन्। 

मुकेशले सोच्यो,”मैले बिरुवाहरु प्रयोग गरेर आफै चलिरहने एउटा सानो संसार बनाउन सक्छु होला त?”

तपाईलाई के लाग्छ? मुकेशले सोचेको जस्तो आफैभित्र सन्तुलित प्रणाली बनाउन के गर्नु पर्ला?

Collect all the required materials

  • Large glass jar with a lid
  • Piece of mesh/mosquito net
  • Pair of scissors
  • A handful of pebbles or gravel
  • A cup of activated carbon (available in aquarium stores)/charcoal
  • A spray bottle filled with water
  • Plants growing in soil (choose a type of plant that needs a lot of water)
  • Moss growing in soil
  • Extra soil
  • Spoon

यी सामग्रीहरू जम्मा गर्नुहोस्। 

  • बन्द गर्न मिल्ने ढकनी भएको सिसाको ठूलो भाडो
  • एउटा कपडाको जाली/पुरानो झुलको टुक्रा
  • कैँची
  • केही साना ढुंगाहरू
  • एक कप एक्टिभेटेड कार्बन(अक़्वेरिअम पसलमा पाइन्छ) अथवा काठको कोइला
  • एउटा पनि भरेको स्प्रे बोतल
  • माटोमा हुर्किरहेका साना बिरुवाहरु(प्रशस्त पानी चाहिने)
  • माटोमा उम्रेको लेउ
  • मलिलो माटो
  • चम्चा

Step 1

Fill the base of the jar with around a layer of pebbles around 2.5 cm deep.

सिसाको भाडोको पींधमा २.५ सेमी जति ढुंगाहरूले भर्नुहोस्।

Step 2

Your jar should now look like this.

त्यसपछि भाडो यस्तो देखिन्छ।

Step 3

Add a 2.5 cm layer of activated carbon or charcoal over the rocks.

अब त्यसको माथि २.५ सेमी जति एक्टिभेटेड कार्बन या कोइला भर्नुहोस्।

Step 4

Cut a circle of mesh wire as wide as the inside of the jar.

कपडाको जालीको भाडोको भित्र अट्ने जति चौडा टुक्रा काट्नुहोस्।

Step 5

Place it inside of the jar on top of the carbon.

त्यो जालीलाई कार्बनको माथी राख्नुहोस्।

Step 6

Add a 2-inch layer of soil on top of the mesh.

अब त्यसको माथि ५ सेमी जति माटो भर्नुहोस्।

Step 7

Now add the moss and the plants.

अब माटोमा बिरुवाहरू र लेउ राख्नुहोस्।

Step 8

Water the plants generously using the spray bottle.

स्प्रे बोतलले बिरुवाहरूलाई प्रशस्त पानी दिनुहोस्।

Step 9

Close the lid tightly and observe the ecosystem over time.

बिर्को कँसेर बन्द गर्नुहोस् र केही समयसम्म भित्रको वातावरण अध्ययन गर्नुहोस्।

Time for Science/ टेरारियम कसरी काम गर्छ?

The sealed container(jar) combined with the heat entering the terrarium allows for the creation of a small water cycle. This occurs because the moisture from both the soil and plants evaporates because of the temperature inside the terrarium. The water vapor then condenses and eventually falls back to the plants and the soil below. This is a major factor in creating a healthy terrarium and growing plants. Besides the water cycle, the light that passes through the transparent container(Jar) of your terrarium allows for the plant inside to photosynthesize which is a very important part of plant growth and life.

Some of the world’s oldest terrariums haven’t been opened in over 50 years.

सिसाको भाडो पारदर्शी भएकाले घामको ताप र किरण भित्र पसेर त्यहाँ एउटा सानो जलचक्र संचालन गर्छन्। बिरुवा र माटोमा भएको पानी बाफ बनेर माथि उड्छ र भाडोको बिर्कोमा टाँसीन्छ। पछि फेरी चिसिएर सो बाफ पानी बनेर तल माटोमा झर्छ। टेरारियमलाई चलाउने मुख्य प्रणाली यही हो। त्यस बाहेक भाडोमा पस्ने घामको किरणले गर्दा बिरुवाले प्रकाश संश्लेषण (फोटोसिन्थेसिस) गर्न सक्षम हुन्छ र बिरुवाको जीवन चक्र चलिरहन्छ। 

विश्वका केहि पुराना टेरारियमहरू विगत पचास वर्ष देखि आफै चलिरहेका छन्।

4. Can you also add in little animals like insects in your terrarium?
